The assembling of HIVE FIVE:

So let's get this tour started...

The cover art was made by the amazing Megan Frauenhoffer and the book design by wunderkind Mark Leicht.

We bought the vellum in parent sheets then cut it down and print on it with a plain old printer. We tried to silk screen on the vellum but it never ended up being consistent enough to trust with a run of five hundred. Pretty expensive paper so we didn't want to be messing up every fifth one or so . . .

Then we bought the paper for the belly bands which fortunately was in a much better weight to be silk screened onto. We cut those parent sheets in half to handle better and got to screening.

Then I took the pages over to Open Book and rented studio time to cut them down on the guillotine

Then I enlisted Curtis Briggs to try and help me fold the dust jackets. Originally I had the insane i dea that the jackets needed four folds. Two for the spine and one for each of the flaps.

This made Curtis (pictured) swear a LOT and decide to never help me on another paper folding endeavor. It was pretty shitty guys the vellum was cracking (we were using rulers and bone folders) and it wasn't as easy as it would seem to get those spine folds perfect. But then in a moment of despair I looked over at my bookshelf full of dustjacketed comics and realized I was an IDIOT. Nobody folds along the spine! You just make two folds for the flaps and let that tension hold the cover snug to the spine! FUCK! So I quickly made a little one sheet jig which was really just two lines where I needed to fold the book to get the best fit. So then that part of the book was smooth sailing....

The books on top of the jacket are just to hold it still while folding.

Next is the part that i am still toiling through and gives me bookmaking stress dreams . . . the belly band. So I decided to use that super thin filmy double sided tape that STICKS TO EVERYTHING BUT WHAT YOU WANT IT TO because I am super smart. Honestly though glue takes too long and all the easier to use tapes just don't stick as well or aren't thin enough to not have the seam be super visible. So yeah . . .I'm still doing the next few steps ad infinitum . . .

Previous Post: The Epilogue

Mark and I missed our train to Minneapolis last month for MIX (long story [actually, short story: we left too late for the station]), so we ended up renting a car and driving the entire way. There's a lot of America between St. Louis and Minneapolis: about nine hours of cornfields, six hours during which the only song on the radio is "Take It Off" by Ke$ha, and three hours during which the only food you can purchase is cheese curds. There's also Iowa's Biggest Frying Pan.

Once we got there, though, it was a Small Comics Press Temporary Editor's dream: we met several Grimalkin favorites (including aforementioned Noah Van Sciver and Dave O'Shell, Sam Sharpe, and Reynold Kissling), networked with potential Grimalkin favorites, and got little pieces of our souls stolen by the local metromix page.

Mark showed me the ways of the big city, including how to use an ATM and how to order room service. I paid big money for a tiny gin and tonic.

Mark and I are getting ready to embark on 15 hour+ journey to display our goods at the Minneapolis Indie Xpo (MIX). Hasn't aero-flight technology made it possible to get from St. Louis to Minneapolis in a matter of hours, you ask? The answer is: yes, it has, but Grimalkin Press travels in style, via Amtrak. Taking the Amtrak is a good way to double or triple your trip time, spend nearly as much money as you would flying, eat weird, grainy veggie burgers, pay $10 for a BudLight, and sit next to people who want to cut your head off, but Mark and I happen to enjoy these things.

Anyway, the main purpose of this post is not to make you jealous about our train trip, but to announce the release of two new Grimalkin publications: Noah Van Sciver's hilarious memoir, Noah Novella, and Dave O'Shell's funny-sad memorial of his father, Owe Apostrophe. We'll get these up on our Etsy store and into your eager hands ASAP.

Noah's so good he has a religion named after him!

In Honor of HIVE 4: New Banner Art Contest!

Four is a significant number, right? Four is the number of fingers you have on your hand if you put down your thumb. It's the number of doors that cars have (except when there's only two). It's the number of black eyes I've given to various ne'er-do-wells in my lengthy tenure as Grimalkin Press Substitute Editor (this is a tough biz, I'm finding). It's the number of rotten apples sitting in my fridge right now. And, most importantly, it is the number of HIVES that Grimalkin Press has released onto an unsuspecting world! [Unfortunately, most of the world is still unsuspecting, even now that our release date has passed -- I wish they'd get suspicious and visit our Etsy store...]

In honor of this milestone, Grimalkin Press is holding a contest to design the banner for this very blog! If we like it enough and you give us permission, we might even adopt it as our official logo! We're calling this contest...

Slight Change of Pace

So for the past year I've been working two jobs at low pay to subsidize Grimalkin Press. And loved every minute of it. However I want to do more than just put HIVE out. I want to make Grimalkin Press something that can publish small minis for creators without the resources to do it themselves, I'd also not like to continue dodging student loan officers to do so. So I've taken a new job. One that pays a gross amount of money. Basically I will be traveling around nonstop catering movie sets. Which will of course take up all of my time for the foreseeable future. What?! Does this mean Grimalkin Press will disappear?! HELL NO! GRIMALKIN PRESS WILL CONTINUE BETTER THAN EVER. Basically I'm just taking this job to better afford bigger and better books to be put out. I'm installing two compatriots as team members to handle all the day to day business in this transitional phase. I definitely want to remained involved in an editorial facet but for the first few months it will take me a while to figure out the practicality of this with traveling all the time etc. So to repeat:

GRIMALKIN PRESS IS CONTINUING! Just at a different pace and staffing.

HIVE 4 is all ready to go and the bases are covered for getting it out and the rest of the publishing schedule will roll out as the wrinkles in this new set up are ironed out. I'll be posting contact information for the two new members in the next day or so.

Gathering Info For Resource Sections

One of the main ideas that was in my head when I started Grimalkin Press was wanting to help and publish all the beautiful work that languished inside of sketchbooks and seldom visited blogs because of how daunting taking the next step to being published seems to lots of artists. I wanted us to be not just an anthology but an institution that helps and guides artists towards the goals of both self publishing and promoting their work. We don't claim to be experts in the field but we do have kindly avuncular natures and the desire to put the sweat and man hours into your project and see it succeed. We get totally stoked at the idea of your comics getting reviewed and people being able to hold the pictures and words that you worked so hard on.

With that in mind I want to put together a section on this site that is a resource pool of publishers that take unsolicited submissions and sites that will review your work. So when you have a new piece finished you can just come here and go down the list mailing it out to your heart's content. We have a list of places we've compiled just from a year or so of pouring over websites and finding new review blogs, but we'd like YOUR help. Email us or comment with lists of all the review sites and underground publishers you know about. We'll continue updating the resource sections as we get your intel.

I think the spirit of community that exists within small press comics is one of the greatest strengths of the medium. Okay that's it kids we'll all meet up at the tree house after school!

News from the printing front.

The faithful mendicants here at Grimalkin Press have been busy spreading the good news of Hive and we are happy to report that the first printing (and most of a second) of Hive: A Somewhat Quarterly Comics Journal have flown off the shelves.
